WHY Strong Life?

September 10, 2020

Most people strive for success and grind every day, but without your health, we have nothing to give. As a Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach, health as always been a top priority to me. Even in my early days, I was always a gym enthusiast and participating in almost every sporting activity possible. As I naturally evolved into the fitness world, my understanding of the comprehensive health focus also evolved.

As my knowledge of the human body expanded, I realized, there was so much more that even I could have been doing to benefit my body as a gym enthusiast. However, as my knowledge of the industry and general public grew, I noticed that what most people are lacking is the Personal Trainer to keep them motivated, accountable and on the best program for their body. If you’ve ever attempted those workout regimes where you’re entirely responsible for your success, there was probably a point where you noticed a decline in motivation. My goal with Strong Life Online is to be there for our memers when that motivation diminishes so that they stay on track to achieving optimal health.

We’ve diversified the fitness programs available at Strong Life Online in order to appeal to every level of fitness. The Live Virtual Bootcamps require no gym equipment at all. Yet they provide 35 minutes of high intensity movement that will be sure to get you sweating. Since these are live, I sweat right along with each and every participant. I also am careful to demonstrate modifications for each exercise so everyone can gear the workout to their appropriate level of intensity. We’ve recently expanded these classes and launched some Live Dumbbell Bootcamps. These of course require some equipment, but bring more of a strength component to the virtual classes.

What we’ve noticed, is since there is a designated time that each participant is required to log in for, they’ve set themselves up for success by limiting the subconscious excuses that impede success. If you pick the classes that work with your schedule, then you have a component of accountability that will keep you on track in completing that physical activity.

In addition to the Live Bootcamps we also have Personal Training Programs. These programs are exactly what I would guide a client through if they were training with me at the gym. Therefore, members are sure to be guiding their bodies through a professionally designed program that will prioritize structural balance and maximize their overall output. Our most comprehensive and customizable program is found in Tier 3. This is where I can completely gear each workout program specifically for that member. So if they have an injury or modification that needs to be accommodated, their program is tailored to their needs. With regards to accountability, again I am able to see what is completed by each member. You’re encouraged to log what you’ve completed, track your progress including weight and measurements and log in frequently throughout the week. This is all monitored by Strong Life Online. So if you haven’t logged in for a while, you can bet I’ll be right there to get you back on track with all the motivation you need.

Finally, for all Strong Lifers, we have a points system that awards members for staying active, completing challenges and being positively involved in the strong life community. These points will accumulate throughout the month. The 3 Leaders at the end of the month are rewarded with discounts off future purchases. This is just a little extra incentive to keep you motivated each month.

For most people, our days are busy, really busy. We need a lot of energy to keep up with the pace of our days and we need the convenience of it fitting in our tight schedules. The best way to create that energy is by staying active and prioritizing at least 30 minutes of movement each day. With Strong Life Online, we make it as easy and convenient as possible to ensure you have qualified training programs and live classes available. The best part is these are available to you at any point throughout your day and there is no travel time. Strong Life Online is your solution to staying active efficiently with the benefits of a Professional Coach.

The Pursuit of your “Ideal”

April 27, 2020

As a Personal Trainer, one of the first questions I ask a new client is: “What is your goal?”. The answer to this is rather consistent across the board. Usually the answer focuses on losing fat, gaining muscle, toning up, or something of that nature. Although it’s great to always have a goal, unrealistic goals can create problems and leave you feeling unfulfilled. The reason for this is 3-fold. These goals focus on what you see in the mirror, the goal itself is a moving target and it usually is not a reflection of your body and instead a desire to look like someone else.

When you look in the mirror what do you see? I hope for everyone that you have the confidence to see the beautiful, unique, strong individual you are. However, most of the population will first see a flaw. We are so hard on ourselves that when we look at the body we are blessed with, instead of approaching it with gratitude, we critique it. This works on a very deep level for some people and there is no easy solution. So instead, I suggest you try and shift your focus from the vanity of your reflection and instead focus on how you feel. Let the progression of your fitness journey be measured on how you’re feeling instead of how you look. What’s your recovery like? Has your blood pressure or cholesterol changed? Are you sleeping better? Are you less bloated? Do you have more energy? Has your mood improved? All of these metrics are a reflection of a stronger path you are traveling down instead of the reflection in the mirror. If you focus on how you feel, instead of how you look, you’ll eventually love both.

Let’s now imagine that you’ve been heading through your fitness journey for a little while and you’re approaching one of the measurable goals that you initially set. Do you take the time to celebrate in your success? This doesn’t mean that the number on the scale drops so you reward yourself with a cheeseburger. This is all too common and is very self-sabotaging. Instead of just the scale, let’s focus on one of the metrics we mentioned above. If your goal was centered around a metric such as blood pressure, heart rate or measurements and one morning you’ve hit the goal that you’ve set for yourself, what is your response? There are three consistent categories here: you can self-sabotage all the hard work that you’ve put in, you can ignore the original goal and immediately set a new one, or you can allow yourself to truly be proud of what you accomplished. Now, the first two in no way acknowledge all the hard work that you have endured. Starting a fitness journey and achieving any goal you’ve set for yourself is hard. Please hear that. It is hard. This is why you need to stop, take the time and be proud of yourself. Do not keep your success a secret because you deserve to be celebrated. I promise if you share your great news there are so many people around you that will want to celebrate you and your success. We have a whole community just waiting to praise you for all of your hard work. So, shout it out to the world and be proud!

With all this talk about goals, I’m going to now ask you a challenging question. Where did your goal stem from? I want you to truly ask yourself, if where this goal originated from is a healthy and productive space. A non-healthy goal is when you inspire to look like someone else. I know I’m stating the obvious here, but I will shout it until I’m blue in the face; everyone is created differently! There may be one female who is 5’2” with 15% body fat who weighs 115lbs and another 5’2’ female with 10% body fat who weighs 115lbs. Believe it or not, their training and caloric intake can be exactly the same, and this can still be the case solely due to genetic makeup. So if you think about the goal you have in mind and it centers around someone other than yourself in this current moment, please check yourself and allow yourself to honor your specific body and its genetic makeup with it’s own specific goals. When I was younger, I dreamed of looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger or Ronnie Colman. You may chuckle at that now, but to an aspiring weight lifter, this was the goal. The issue that I did not consider was not only the genetic makeup specific to those men, but also what may be happening behind the scenes. When we compare ourselves to “fitness” celebrities there are plenty of enhancements and alterations that are skewing the image of what we are comparing ourselves to. Therefore, not only are these people the elite to begin with, they are usually further altered with synthetic enhancements and/or photoshopped. I’m not accusing Arnold or Ronnie of this as in my mind they are still worthy of all my admiration. I’m simply pointing out that if you shape your fitness goal by comparing yourself to someone else, you are chasing the impossible. Focus on you and you will succeed.

With all this talk on how to structure your goals, I hope they are now centered around metrics. I hope it focuses on how you feel rather than how you look. Most importantly, I hope the reason for this fitness journey is to honor your health and your unique body as opposed to an attempt to look like anyone else. There is only one you and you are important. I can help you through this journey, so you can achieve your goals and ultimately live your version of a Strong Life.

Why Is Structural Balance so Important?

April 2, 2020

First of all, structural balancing is a variation of strength training that I focus on with my clients. I like to think of structural balancing as building the foundation of a house. Building a house on a poorly designed foundation will cause you all types of issues with the structure of your house. Your body’s structure works similarly. If you are not structurally balanced and start building on top of those “imbalances”, there is a stronger chance of pain or even injury. You may not see the negative results of being imbalanced immediately, however they are certain to rear their ugly head in the long-run.

Structural balancing ensures one side of your body is as strong as the other. For example; your front is as strong as your back, your left is as strong as your right exc. Assuming you’re right dominant, most people’s right arm is going to be stronger than their left. Something of this caliber may not have major consequences. However, what if your back is not as strong as your chest? In this case there is a strong possibility that this imbalance could lead to anterior rotation of the shoulder. This means your shoulders hunch forward which can lead to all types of back issues, shoulder issues and poor posture. Correcting these imbalances will not only improve your overall strength, but it will assist in your prevention against injuries and daily pain.

Correcting imbalances also helps with improving energy output. If we continue with the chest and back example, let’s assume that you have a great structural balance ratio of 1:1. With this optimal balance you will be able to produce more strength output in a compound lift. Therefore, completing an exercise like a bench press will yield much stronger results with a lower chance of injury. This proper balance ratio will also assist in correcting your posture throughout the day. Improving your posture has many benefits especially for those experiencing any sort of shoulder pain, lower and upper back pain etc.

The programs I’ve designed for the Strong Life members ensure that proper structural balancing is high on the priority list. There may be the odd time where a certain exercise seems trivial, however, it is important in the overall program to emphasize balance in order to optimize strength. Correcting any existing structural imbalances can take time. Being consistent over time will yield amazing results.

HAPPY LIFTING!
